| In The News ... Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club, Benton Harbor, Michigan, a MichianaGolf.com 5-Star Certified Course
Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club, one of Southwest Michigan's premier private courses, is a full-service country club with an 18-hole championship course. The "Point," as it is fondly referred to by many, is just a few miles from the Lake Michigan shoreline.
The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and opened in 1958. About Jones, who designed (or redesigned) 500 or so golf courses in at least 40 US states and 35 other countries all around the world, it has been jokingly said that, "The sun never sets on a Robert Trent Jones golf course." Jones referred to The Point as "perhaps my best American course," and countless golfers agree. In fact, Golf Week Magazine and Golf Digest consistently rate Point O' Woods among the top 100 courses in the country.
Over the years, The Point has hosted some of golf's true legends including Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Phil Mickelson as well as serving as host to the Western Amateur for nearly four decades.
The course layout has a parkland setting with no tricks or penalties for hitting a 'good' shot. The greens run true, but the rough can be penalizing.
Although some holes may appear unassuming at first glance, don't be fooled. Every hole on this well-maintained course can and will test your skills.
Case in point is The Point's signature hole # 9. From the member tees, this Par-3 has a spectacular view that features a narrow and deep green surrounded by bunkers. The 197-yard hole also has water all along the left side and the green slopes severely towards the water.
While the original design has remained unchanged, many upgrades have since taken place. The irrigation and drainage have been upgraded, as well as bunker renovations.
Amenities at the Point O' Woods Golf & Country Club include golf lessons, leagues, a full clubhouse, on-site cottage rentals, and much more.
