| In The News ... Moss Creek Golf Club, Winamac, Indiana
Moss Creek Golf Club opened play in 1959 as a 9-Hole course. According to Scott Roudebush, Course Manager and Owner, "Moss Creek Golf Club was owned by 9 men, who each designed one hole. In 1985, my Dad (Brooks Roudebush) and I bought the course. My first project was to add the Back 9 holes; which I designed myself."
Roudebush also designed Chesapeake Run Golf Club in North Judson, Indiana.
Moss Creek Golf Club appears to be one of those courses that many first-time visitors believe they will shoot well under their handicap, yet leave wondering why that didn't happen.
Moss Creek Golf Club has a traditional layout with varying obstacles. Half of the course cuts through wooded areas (many of the trees planted by Roudebush) and other parts take on the waters of, primarily, Moss Creek.
Interestingly, golfers will find that Moss Creek Golf Club has the only covered bridge in several counties. While there are a number of cart bridges that cross water along the course -- golfers must cross over water 7 times on the Front 9 alone, after your approach shot on the 323-yard 11th hole, you will pass through a red covered bridge en route to the elevated green.
Another interesting feature of Moss Creek Golf Club is a wooden monument of a Native American halfway down and just in the rough of the 16th fairway. "While we were excavating the area," explains Roudebush, "where numbers 12, 13 and 16, 17 run alongside each other, we found many arrowheads. Most were still in excellent condition."
One of the features separating Moss Creek Golf Club from many other courses, states Roudebush, "is our Family-Oriented atmosphere. Not only are there 7 or 8 family members working here, but we also host many couples' events, Junior Golf Tournaments, have a Junior Rate, and, during certain times, kids can play for free with a paying parent."
Many leagues are available as well. While Roudebush listed the number of leagues and the large quantity of golfers involved, one had to wonder if the entire county played there!
Roudebush began playing golf at the age of 7 at Moss Creek Golf Club. His son, Karsten, has done the same and is developing into quite a player. Unfortunately, his father has since passed away, but many golfers participate in the Annual Brooks Roudebush Memorial Tournament benefiting local kids' programs and the Riley Children's Hospital.
The course is visibly mature and in excellent condition. Amenities include power and pull carts, GPS marking for Sky Caddy, club rental, putting & chipping green, a driving range, on-course restrooms, Pro Shop, and a fully-stocked bar.
If food is on your mind after a wonderful round of golf, Roudebush recommends ("They have the best cheeseburgers in the area.") Bill & Babe's Other Place, 103 S Monticello Street, in downtown Winamac.
Moss Creek Golf Club is a course well worth trying and deserving of its reputation as one of the finest courses in Northern Indiana. Just be careful to not bounce a shot off the Indian Monument and through the covered bridge, or you'll have quite a tough recovery shot!
